Bill C-4: Anti-smuggling, or anti-refugee?

During the last Parliament, the government introduced Bill C-49, a so-called anti-human smuggling bill. Earlier this year, the BCCLA issued a position paper criticizing C-49 as a piece of anti-refugee legislation, outlining the many ways it violated both international law and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The BCCLA also joined civil society organizations across Canada calling for the defeat of Bill C-49.

The current Parliament has brought the reintroduction of this bill, now resurrected as Bill C-4. It is substantively identical to its predecessor bill, and suffers from the same serious deficiencies. The BCCLA again announced its opposition to the new bill.
