On August 19-21st, President Bush, Prime Minister Harper and President Calderón (Mexico) will be holding closed-door meetings to discuss a contentious trade agreement (the Security and Prosperity Partnership) in Montebello, QC.
The B.C. Civil Liberties Association is looking for individuals with legal backgrounds to act as Legal Observers at the protests anticipated on August 20th. We will also be calling on any protesters who attended the event and witnessed serious transgressions of civil liberties to contact us afterwards to give statements.
Legal Observers will be asked to document arrests, use of force, intimidating displays of force, denial of access to public spaces like parks and sidewalks, and any other behaviour on the part of law enforcement that appears to restrict demonstrators' ability to express their political views.
Transportation can be arranged through local organizations.
If you are interested in volunteering your time at this event, or if you wish to report police abuses of civil liberties at the protests after they have occurred, please call Christina Godlewska, Articled Student at the B.C. Civil Liberties Association at 604-630-9749.
