Access Public Information
Held By Provincial And Municipal Bodies In BC

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act outlines the right to access information produced by the government. This includes government ministries, governmental boards and agencies, municipalities, crown corporations and health authorities. Although all provincial and municipal bodies are subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, there is a different application process for crown corporations and health authorities.

Informal Request

You may visit, call, mail or fax the organization or the Access to Information and Privacy Coordinator of the organization to request information.  This may be viewed as an informal request, and the organization may not see a legal obligation to respond.  However, this method may be the quickest. When seeking information from a ministry, you can to contact the Information Access Manager. You may find this list of government boards and agencies and this directory of municipalities useful when looking for an appropriate contact within other government bodies.

Formal Request

Step 1:

Fill out the online form for public information from a ministry or make a request in writing.

Or, fill out the form to seek public information from all other public bodies.

Step 2:

If you are seeking records from a government ministry, you can send your form to Information Access Operations. If you are seeking information from governmental Boards and Agencies or Municipalities, you will have to submit the form directly. You may find this list of government boards and agencies and the directory of municipalities below useful in determining where to submit your form. Any government body subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act is legally obligated to respond to a formal request.

Next:

If your request is denied without good reason, or if you feel the government body is improperly withholding information from you, you can file a complaint with the public body.
