Access Public Information
Held By Federal Government Bodies

The Access to Information Act outlines the right to access information produced by the federal government.

Formal Request

Step 1:

Fill out the Access to Information Request Form (also available in RTF format).

Describe the information you are looking for and any relevant details that may help the government body locate the records. Info Source provides a description of program records held by federal government bodies. You can also contact the Access to Information and Privacy Coordinator if you need assistance defining the records you are looking for.

Step 2:

Mail or fax the completed form to the Access to Information Coordinator of the government body. Consult the list of Access to Information Coordinators to determine where to send your completed form.

You must include with your request a $5.00 money order or cheque. Cheques and money orders should be made payable to the Receiver General for Canada if they are on this list. Otherwise, money orders and cheques should be made payable to the government body.

Next:

If your request for information is denied in whole or in part, you have the right to complain to the Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada.
