Secrecy, Security, and Access to Information
“Spin versus the Right to Know”

Ann Rees (Journalism Instructor, Kwantlen Polytechnic University) will speak about the disparity between citizens' right to authentic information about government  in a democracy and the reality of the Prime Minister's Office's strategic use of spin and information control for partisan political advantage.

Mike Larsen (Criminology Instructor, Kwantlen Polytechnic University) will review a trail of documents obtained through Access to Information (ATI) law that relate to the collection and use of information derived from torture by Canadian security and intelligence agencies. He will provide a commentary on the implications of this practice and on the role of ATI methods in a critique of security.

“State Secrecy and the Struggle for the Disclosure of Afghan Detainee Documents”
