Fundraising Events & Team Challenges: find out how you can make a difference >>
A FREE, PUBLIC DISCUSSION
Thursday, May 15, 2008
7:30 pm
Vancouver Public Library
350 West Georgia Street
Alma VanDusen and Peter Kay Rooms
A silicon chip in your Viagra pack reports back to Pfizer on how much you took, and when.
You fetch the last Coke from your chip-tagged fridge and your TV airs a Pepsi ad.
Your phone company combs your trash for the chips you've cast off, selling the data it finds to marketers.
Sound like science fiction? This may be the reality of electronic chips called Radio Frequency Identifications (RFIDs), according to Halifax-based writer, Dawn Rae Downton.
Panelists:
Jacquelyn Burkell, Information & Media Studies, Univ. of Western Ontario
Ian Kerr, Law, University of Ottawa
Valerie Steeves, Criminology, University of Ottawa
Panel Chair: David Loukidelis, Information and Privacy Commissioner for BC
